POLICE HAVE CARRIED out as simultaneous raids across Northern Ireland, the Republic DI Ireland, England and Scotland is part of an investigation into a ;ang involved in smuggling waste 'rom the Republic to Northern Ireland and Scotland.
As previously reported, they an a string of illegal dumps Across Northern Ireland: the -aids centred on the Derrylin irea of the province, 90 miles Nest of Belfast and only a couple if miles from the border with the Republic.
Sixteen of the raids were in Northern Ireland, with 10 in the Republic (Cavan, Monaghan. 2.ork and Waterford) and one :ach in England and Scotland.
Police have frozen over E2m in issets belonging to alleged gang members.
Detective Superintendent Andy Sproule of the PSN Ts Organized Crime Squad says the investigation had been going on for six months:"We seized a lot of documents, computers, vehicles, plant. machinery, and what looks like illegal fireworks and tobacco. "It shows the breadth of the criminal enterprise. We have seized a substantial amount of documents, but it is too early to talk about charges."
Police were also investigating how the gang laundered their revenue.
