POLICE HAVE CARRIED out as simultaneous raids across Northern Ireland, the Republic DI Ireland, England and Scotland is part of an investigation into a ;ang involved in smuggling waste 'rom the Republic to Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Detective Superintendent Andy Sproule of the PSN Ts Organized Crime Squad says the investigation had been going on for six months:"We seized a lot of documents, computers, vehicles, plant. machinery, and what looks like illegal fireworks and tobacco. "It shows the breadth of the criminal enterprise. We have seized a substantial amount of documents, but it is too early to talk about charges."

Police were also investigating how the gang laundered their revenue.
