• Eighteen hauliers went to the wall last December, according to figures compiled by accountant Touche Ross.
A total of 76 transport companies went into receivership or were subject to administration orders last year, compared to 84 in 1992.
Touche Ross predicts the number of business failures will fall significantly this year. • Scottish Express International has pipped Lynx, Elan and Warwick-based Pioneer Distribution to a nationwide haulage deal with Italian automotive components manufacturer Magneti MareIli.
This week Dundonald-based SE1 will pick up its first load of electrical components from Magneti MareIli's warehouse in Rugby, Warwickshire.
It will use non-dedicated vehicles out of its Coalville site to provide a two-day parts supply service for 40 independent automotive wholesalers and agents, which have about 150 outlets.
Magneti MareIli expects to use the Securicor Omega Express subsidiary for a minimum of 12 months, although it has not signed a binding contract. It also anticipates that it may need SET to supply dedicated vehicles, out of its 120strong fleet, as demand for its parts increases.
