• Castle Cement, which employs more than 300 drivers, has recognised the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) again, just two years after de-recognising it.
The company and the union have set up national and local forums to discuss drivers' pay and conditions, health and safety issues and commercial performance. The agreement follows six months of negotiations between TGWU officers and the company's management. The first meeting for the national forum will be 25 February.
Castle de-recognised the union two years ago for drivers but the relationship has improved since the firm struck a new deal with factory workers in 1995, says union officer Ran Webb. 'It's a joint approach to the company's commercial position and its employees' welfare," he adds. 'We've just kept plugging away." Castle operates 300 tankers taking sand to cement manufacturers. Personnel director Tony Pascoe welcomes the move and hopes to develop it further.
