• Sales of trucks and artics got off to a disastrous start in • January as sales fell by more than a third compared with January 1996. All the major manufacturers recorded reduced sales, but the lveco Group, Mercedes-Benz and Scania were all particularly hard hit as their sales fell by nearly 50% on 1996 levels.

Leyland Daf was the only volume manufacturer to escape a large fall in sales. It sold 613 trucks in January, nearly 200 more than its closest rival MercedesBenz. Dennis was the only truck maker to sell more units this January than in January 1996. Mercedes-Benz: January sales levels almost half the January 1996 level.
