WEST MIDLAND "DEPUTY IN FIVE APPEALS

FIVE appeals against decisions of the 1. West Midland Deputy Licensing Authority will be heard next week by the Appeal Tribunal at Halifax House, Strand, London, W.C.2.

LAST year, British manufacturers produced about 158,000 commercial vehicles, of which 3,275 were battery

• electrics. Production of cars and commercial vehicles combined reached the pre-war figure of 445,000 units. Although the number of cars manufactured was smaller by 54,000, the difference was offset by the increased output of commercial vehicles.

"Although a highly significant effort. the outcome by no means represents what the industry could now achieve with a sufficient and steady flow of essential supplies," says the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Apart from battery-electrics, 154,670 commercial vehicles were manufactured in 1947. Of these, 154,284 were for civilian use. The home market took 103,882 vehicles and 50,402 went for export.

Production by classes for civilian service was as follows:—Under 15 cwt.. 57,838; 15 cwt. and under 6 tons, 79,703; 6 tons and over, 4.006, and motorbuses and trolleybuses, 12,737, December's outpit contributed 15,749 units to the tota. Of this number. 9,803 vehicles were for home use and 5,946 for export. Vehicles of under 15 cwt. numberd 5,020; 15 cwt. and under 6 tons, ts,830; 6 tons and over, 463; and motorbuses and trolleybuses. 1,436. December's contribution showed an appreciable rise from the figure of 13,734 in November.

DUAL CONTROL FOR LEARNERS

SALFORD Corporation's drivers will in future receive driving instruction on a dual-control double-deck bus. A complete secondary set of controls immediately behind the driver's cab will permit the instructor to have complete charge of the vehicle at all times.

'MUNICIPAL CONGRESS TO BE REVIVED AFTER 10 YEARS

AI-IER a lapse of 10 years, the Public Health and Municipal Engineering Congress and Exhibition is to be revived at Olympia, London, from November 15-20. It will celebrate the centenary of the first Public Health Act in Britain.

The Minister of Health has approved the exhibition and has sanctioned the payment out of public funds of the expenses of up to three delegates from each local authority.

This year's exhibition will be larger and wider in scope than ever before, and will cover every branch of public service. Exhibits will include appliances for street cleansing and refuse disposal, and other municipal transport vehicles.

TALKING TURKEY

EARLY in March, Mr Wilfred Sloane, a Turkish-born British subject, will leave for Turkey on behalf of the British Export Trade Research Organization. His services are available to all exporters who require general market data, information on price structure, competition, agents and other matters, for their products in Turkel', Iraq and Iran.

STRENUOUS efforts are being Made to attract overseas buyers to the British Industries Fair; to be held in London and Birmingham from May 3-14.

During December, advertisements of the event began to appear in 29 languages in the Press of 63 countries. In October the dispatch to 100,000 overseas buyers of invitations and brochures in 12 languages was started. Posters, showcards, menu cards, stamps and other display material in 13 languages have been mailed in bulk for redistribution in 81 territories.
