THE report of Thomas Tilling, Ltd., for the year 1941 shows a profit, after providing for debenture stock and other interest, of £524,496. The preference-share dividend for the half year to June 30 took £8,250, and an interim dividend of 5 per cent, on the ordinary stock, £206,000. After the preference dividend for the second half of the year is met, and a final dividend of 5 per cent., less tax, is paid on the ordinary stock (making 10 per cent, for the year), in addition to the deduction of £100,000 allocated to general reserve, there remains a balance of £167,305 to carry forward, as compared with £171,310 brought in.
The report is accompanied by a review of the year by Mr. John F. Heaton, chairman, during the course of which lie said that the company does not view its producer-gas operations as merely a war-time expedient, provided an adeqnate supply of suitable fuel at
a reasonable price can be assured. , He thinks that there is no reason why the operation of a proportion of the company's services, by producer-gas
• vehicles should not prove to be a permanent feature. He made it clear that, through its group of companies, over 1,000,000 miles had been operated by vehicles on producer gas, and, as only essential services are run, it means that approximately 100,000 gallons of imported liquid fuel have been saved by this 'means.
In vehicles converted to producer gas, Mr. Heaton said that there has been some loss of power, but, nevertheless, no difficulty in • maintaining ordinary time-tables has been experienced. In this connection, it may be found desirable, he thinks, when times are again normal, to design a special engine and chassis for producer gas, and hinted that the subject is already feceiving preliminary consideration,
