A further 23 Norbert Dentressangle (ND) middle managers commenced the logistics firm's two-year foundation degree in leadership and management programme last month.

To date, 24 managers have graduated from the programme since its launch in 2008, with another 15 due to complete in January. Of those who have graduated, all are still employed by the business and 65% have been promoted.

"The rationale behind the degree was to address a gap in our development offering within our management structure," said HR director Mark Simmons. "We have a new graduate programme and a Henley-style MBA for our senior executives, but nothing for our middle managers. A lot of our people at this level have developed within the business, often ex-drivers who have worked their way up, and many without an academic background."

The ND degree has been developed and is delivered in collaboration with the University of Northampton.

According to Simmons, there is a high level of interest in the programme. "It needs to be pitched to the right individual because it is a big commitment to take a degree while holding a full-time job, and, from a company investment perspective, it is around £5,000 per person," explained Simmons. "But having the right people with the right skills is at the heart of our service to customers — and the ability to foster and retain talent is critical as we continue to grow our business," he said.
