, tragic mix-up could have led to le death of the eight stowways in a container in County i/exford, Ireland last week.

Investigators are looking at le possibility that they were laced inside the P&O container 1 Zeebrugge in the belief that it has destined for a short sea rossing to Britain. Instead they ,iere taken on a two-day trip in a roe 10 gale to Beiview Port in :o Waterford.

The Belgian port has a RO10 terminal, and a container terminal for trans-shipment traffic. British contact numbers were found in the container when it was finally opened at its destination in Wexford, three days after it Left Belgium.

Three children were among the eight dead—five survivors were taken to intensive care in hospital suffering from the effects of suffocation.

The group included 11 Turks from two families and two men, from Algeria and Albania.

Derek Coleman, the Eagle Transport driver who brought the container from Waterford to the business park, was deeply shocked when he opened the doors to find bodies and an overpowering stench inside.

Eagle Transport owner Gerry Hallissey says: ''Nobody in their right sense would put people into a shipping container. These things can sit on a quay at times for months, depending on when the product is required."

Most stowaways arriving in Ireland favour curtainsiders because they could escape by slashing through the curtains.
