I The Traffic Commissioners are to turn up the heat on drivers who break the hours rules and are warning them the old "my employer' forced me to" will no longer wash,

This is one of the measures in the IC's updated guidelines that are due to be published in the New Year.

At their heart is the guidance to TCs around the country that they should in future come down hard on drivers

who are caught abusing the hours regulations. A clampdown is also expected on the falsification of tacho charts.

"We have been concerned for some time that drivers don't seem to be getting the message about hours," says Senior TC Michael Betts. "The message is that this won't be tolerated in the future and the TCs will be taking action."

Betts is concerned that drivers have for too long hid den behind the "I didn't want to get the sack" excuse—in future more drivers are likely to lose their licences.

The guidelines are also expected to make the penalty system more transparent. The details are still being thrashed out, but more 0licence revocations are also on the cards—as is a clarification of how the the TCs define the phrase "appropriate financial standing".
