recently when he dropped into Jersey for a review of the Island's haulage scene for our Christmas issue (CM20 Dec-02 Jan) Our intrepid scribe paid a visit to Trevor du Fue, director of Huelin Renouf-Shipping. Du Fue's Portakabin is Britain's most southerly haulage office, perched on a quay a few feet above the Atlantic rollers.
"Things seemed pretty normal at first," says Maughan. But it seems that Neptune decided to punish Maughan for past misdemeanours...the sky went black, the rain came dowr and the waves raged. The unsuspecting Maughan was deluged. "I had to run for cover. I wish I'd taken my mackintosh with me. I wouldn't have minded but the sea spray has done permanent damage h my desert boots," he says.
Maughan was last reported tucked up at home with his feet in a bowl of hot water and mustard.
(No expenses claim for your namby-pamby desert boots, eithei Maughan—pinch some hobnail clogs from the Technical Desk stockroom like everyone else—Ed).
Missed your ferry? Never mind, it could be worse.. Loitering over a cup of char and The Suncrossword in a truckstop, a Backfire correspondent overheard the following conversation between two drivers...
First driver: "I rang the boss from Calais and I said, I've got a bit of trouble here, I've missed the ferry."
Second driver 'And what did he say?"
H): "He said I But then he said, you'll just have to get the next one."
SD: "Well, that seems sensible. What did you say?"
Mk "I said, boss, you don't understand. I've missed the ferry by two feet. The truck's in the water."
SD: "And what did he say?"
