Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE BRITISH pay a higher rate of duty on dery than any other member of the European Community.

Minister of State to the Treasury, Peter Rees, reported in the Commons last week that the British duty on dery was ten pence per litre, with the next highest figure being the equivalent of nine pence levied in Germany. Italians had to find the least — the equivalent of one pence per litre.

When it comes to vat, the 15 per cent levied on both dery and petrol in the UK contrasts with the 25 per cent of the highest, Belgium, and the five per cent of the lowest, Luxembourg.
