Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Edinburgh Corporation Transport's report for the year ended May 28 1.968 states that th the year had been "possibly e most difficult since the era of the general strike"; it cites the work to rule of October 23 to November 14 1967 and the complete withdrawal of labour from November 15 to 19. Passenger. figures-173,1 59,502-showed a decrease of 10,296,028 over the previbus year.

Total deficit for the year was £7,658. Consequently it had not been possible to pay off the £130,000 deficit incurred in 1967. Nor had it made a contribution to bus renewals. -While, in terms of a revenue of nearly £5m per annum, this is a comparatiyely low figure, the deficit must be dealt with in the not too distant future" ,says the report.

Mileage was 22,239,055 (1967: 23,556,842).

To help the situation, the corporation is to increase all bus fares by one penny. In a report the transport convenor called for immediate action to secure bus lane priorities to allow public service vehicles to operate effettively. The introduction of bus lanes on Princes Street. the Bridges, Lothian Road, and Shandwick Place is sotight along with increased control of parking and introduction of one way streets.
