‘"HIEF assets of the latest 10-tonner, the KL 10-6, to be added to the range of cranes produced by K. and L. Steelfounders and Engineers, Etd., Letchworth, Herts, are its compactness and nnanceuvrability. These were demonstrated on Tuesday at the premises of George Cohen Sons and Co., Ltd., Wood Lane, London, W.12, distributors of Jones cranes in Great Britain.

Available on a range of chassis which cover a wide variety of applications, the newcomer is powered by a Perkins P4 oil engine and is fully slewing.

The drive from the power unit is taken through a three-speed gearbox and triplex roller chain to separate dry-plate clutches for the four crane motions, thus making it possible to use full engine power on each. They can be used independently or in any combination that is desired.

The standard four-wheel-drive chassis has single pneumatic tyres sandwiched between protective flanges. Steering is progressivelf power assisted, and there a compensating device to give normal action in any position of the superstructure. As standard, only two wheels ace' steered, hut a four-wheel-steering versien can be supplied:

Precise load control is assured during lowering by a governor mechanism or an auxiliary drive from the crane engine, which enables even a semi-skilled driver to " inch" thc load. A sectional, latticeconstruction strut-type jib is marrnal, having a basic length of 30 ft. Additional 10-ft. sections can he added up to a total of four. Swan-neck and other special types of jib are available. Safe working loads tire calculated at not more than two-thirds of the tipping toad, and outriggers with quick-acting screw jacks are

located at each corner.

Using the 30-ft. jib, maximum safe working load is 10 tons at 10-ft. radius with the jacks out, or 6 tons if the crane is free on its wheels. Maximum lift with the 50-ft. jib is 41 tons at 15-ft. radius, whilst 3 tons at 17 ft. 7 in. can be raised

with.. the 70-ft. jib fitted. Optional lifting attachments include magnets up to 3 ft. 4 in. in diameter and grabs up to a. capacity of 34-37 cu. ft.

Among the chassis offered is a specially designed six-wheeled carrier with forward control and capable of road speeds up to 30 m.p.h.
