It is the custom at the docks in London for the constable on the gates to take charge of the cans of spare petrol from all motor lorries entering, returning them as the vehicles leave.
The4other day an inexperienced constable was at the gate of a certain dock and as a big lorry entered he asked of the driver : " Have you any petrol aboard ? "
"No," replied the driver, "only what I have in the tank."
" Very well," said the constable, " let's have it here: can't take it in with you ; you ought to know that! "
