is carried in vehicle tanks at 200 bar pressure and ambient temperature. It is fed to a sparkignition petrol engine or a diesel engine that has been converted to spark ignition.
The weight and location of the vehiclemounted tanks, plus a limited range, are a problem. A compressor and filling station have to be built at the operator's depot, which is usually supplied from the local domestic gas mains.
CNG versions of well-proven engines, such as the Cummins ISC, are available, and these run quieter than their diesel equivalents. CNG has been used in some suburban bus fleets over the past decade.
