A TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION on the Isle of Man is urging the government to overhaul its 0-licensing system after presentations to discuss the plans faced a barrage of criticism.

The Island Road Transport Association (IRTA) says the Department for Transport (DfT) must not give up on overhauling Manx law because it will make the haulage industry more professional.

But smaller hauliers fear they'll face extra expenses for little gain, in a system that won't be adequately policed.

It is understood that only around 50-60 people attended three Dn. presentations last week, but government officials were bombarded by questions from concerned hauliers.

Bernard Wade, for CV repairer Wades Truck Services, says: "The island is too small, and the way they're going to police it is a bit vague. The expense outweighs the principles. It will hit the one-man bands rather than the big firms. They'll have more work to do to keep up to specification."

But an IRTA spokesman says it is vital that a system is introduced. He says: "We are making sure that this is done properly and that it supports reputable hauliers. The problem is that it's 2009, and this island is behind the times on everything. There are no professional requirements on anything over here. What harm would it do to make sure the haulage industry looks professional'?"

A Dif spokesman adds that the system will ensure good companies are not put at a disadvantage. He says: "There's no lawful way of stopping an operator that uses a poorly maintained vehicle or one who makes a decision to cut back on maintenance to gain a competitive edge over another."
