Third Country Traffic: Specially overstamped permits are available from IRFO for

permitted traffic between Spain and a third country. Here are the different types of permits:

* Spanish Quota Permits At present the supply is almost sufficient to meet the needs of UK operators.

* Backloading agreements: British operators may obtain Spanish Permits for every backload given.

* Non-quota permits are readily available for certain types of operation; there is no restriction on the number which may be issued during the year.

Operators travelling to Spain through France will need to be already in possession of French Permits.

Additionally, some operations require no permit at all; although for Spain drivers must obtain a journey record document from officials at the Spanish frontier. This must be completed and returned to the frontier officials at the point of departure from Spain; otherwise a fine may be imposed.

Extra special permits: An extra special permit is required for vehicles, including the load carried, which exceed the maximum dimensions of vehicles allowed td operate in Spain. Application has to be made to the Spanish Authorities namely Division Explotacion, Direccion General de Transportes Terrestres, Ministerio de Obras Publicas, Avenida del Generalisimo Madrid.

(2) Vehicle's registration number. (3)Gross plated weight of vehicle.

(4) Unladen weight of vehicle (5) Overall dimensions and number of axles of vehicle.

(6) Loading and/or unloading points.

(7) Description and weight of goods carried.

(8) Nature of operation, ie "hire and reward" or "own account" and also, in triplicate, a sketch showing the side and rear of the vehicle.

* Full National Licence, provided a translation into Spanish is available, or an International Driving Permit.

* Vehicle Registration papers (form V5).

* International Insurance Certificate (Green Card).

* Permit/Rail Certificate/'Non Quota Permit.

* Journey record.

For all goods you must have a CMR Consignment Note for all hire and reward operations.

Also necessary: TIR Carnet or EUR Movement Certificate (for all goods emanating from EEC member states). For dangerous goods, an ADR certificate is also needed.

DANGEROUS GOODS: Tank vehicles used for the carriage of dangerous goods must be specially certified. Contact the Department of Transport for details.

WARNING TRIANGLES: Warning triangles must be carried on the vehicle for use in emergencies.
