A MERCEDES-:BENZ 310 chassis cab forming the basis of the modular ambulance has been supplied to the Isle of Wight Ambulance Authority.

Equipped with laminated windscreen and rear stabilisers, the standard short wheelbase cab features, five-speed gearbox and the uprated petrol engine giving an output of 70kW ,(94bhp), Taurus Bodies of Stockport supplied the ambulance body bolted on to the can so that when the vehicle reaches the end of its life as an ambulance the body can be removed and remounted on to another chassis.

The exterior aluminium panels are bonded to the interior glass fibre walls by polystyrene, giving heat and sound insulation. The Ambulance Authority claims headroom is greater and cleaning is easier than with existing ambulances.

It will evaluate the vehicle during the next 12 months, before replacing more of its 14 frontline-ambulances. •
