VOLVO is considering extending further down the weight scale.

Anders Levin, general manager truck sales and service, told CM that this is very much a long term exercise and no decision has yet been made.

Currently the UK Volvo range stops at 16 tons with the Ghentbuilt F6, If it is decided that moving into the lower categories is a viable proposition, the F6 range will be extended with the addition of the nine to 15-tonne versions already marketed on the Continent.

Eventually the 7.5 tonne non hgv F4 would be added but Anders Levin stressed that this was a "very long-term possibility".

The lighter F6 models and the F4 would continue to be built at Ghent; there is no likelihood of any right-hand drive UK versions being built at Irvine.

When asked if Volvo could be competitive on price with Ford and Bedford in this very competitive sector Mr Levin replied: "That is what people asked when we launched the 16-ton F6 and that has been a success."
