A NEW AWARD from the National Freight Corporation, the Award for Meritorious Service, was presented for the first time this week.

Sir Daniel Pettit, chairman and chief executive of NFC, made the presentation on Friday to three members of Western Branch Road Services staff at Newport (Gwent) and Bristol.

The recipients, recognized for "acts involving conduct amounting to an acceptance of risk or responsibility in a particular situation, above and beyond the call of duty," were Daniel Davies, 49, a driver from the Alexandra Road Dock branch at Newport. and Gordon Parsons, 59, cashier and Gilbert Cross, 54, vehicle foreman, from the Bedminster, Bristol branch.

Mr Davies was commended for his quick action when he noticed smoke pouring from the back of his truck. Despite injuring his hand he managed to push the load from the trailer onto the ground before the fire-brigade arrived. His action saved 22 out of 32 rolls of newsprint, and reduced the damage to the truck to the rear "Long Trailer" sign.

Mr Parsons and Mr Cross received their awards for foiling an attempted robbery of the staff payroll. They were carrying the wages, amounting to some £3,700, from the bank to their car when a young man grabbed the bag and ran off with it. But with the help of a passer-by they grappled with the thief and forced him to the ground. The bag and its contents were retrieved intact.

For their actions all three recipients were awarded inscribed silver salvers and sums of money.
