The Department of the Environment has taken part in discussions on the content of the directives, which set out standards for the positioning, visibility, colour and light intensity of lamps and reflectors on vehicles and trailers.

Dr John Gilbert, Minister for Transport, proposed at the meeting of Ministers that vehicles be required to have reversing lamps. This was agreed and the Ministers also accepted that red rear fog lamps and four-way hazard flashers should become compulsory.

These new directives will come into force in October 1977, and although at present they do not impose any new obligations on British manufacturers, vehicles sold in this country will eventually have to meet these new standards.
