Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Truck dealers bidding to take over truck registration work might be forced to revise their offer after a trade union warning that European law could make dealers liable for compensation to the 500 staff made redundant from Vehicle and Registration Offices (VR0s).

The Driver and Licensing Authority has already closed one VRO and the remaining 50 are set to close within two years. The aim is that eventually all registrations will be handled by dealers.

But unions fighting the job Losses at the VROs are arguing that the burden of compensation for possible unfair dismissals or redundancy payments could then fall on the dealers taking up the work under the EU Acquired Rights Directive on the transfer of work.

The unions say the European Court of Justice has already ordered compensation to be paid to workers in two cases where work has been contracted out to a third party.
