• Pay levels for managers in transport and distribution are rising well ahead of the rate of inflation and the national average, according to a survey of management salaries by the Reward Group.

Transport managers' salaries rose 12.2% last year, while distribution managers salaries rose by 9.7% (the average rise in management salaries was 8.5%).

Reward says the average transport manager's total salary last year was £13,874. The equivalent for distribution managers was 217,089.

The highest-paid distribution managers are in Scotland, where the average salary last year was £19,461 compared with 219,171 in London. The region with the lowest average pay for distribution managers is East Anglia (£13.504), though average salaries in the South West were only slightly higher (213,560).

Transport managers are paid best in Scotland, where the average salary last year was 216,015 compared with the lowest-paying region, the West Midlands, where the average was 211,900.

The overall average total managerial salary in Britain last year was £14,052.

Reward says there has been a steady decline in the level of bonus payments to managers. Distribution managers experienced a 0.4% drop in bonus payments last year, and transport managers suffered a 4% drop.

The Reward Survey also found that only 13.8% of transport managers, compared with 62% of distribution managers get company cars.
