• Environmental objections have cost the country £7 million and put back the planned new Al-M1 link by at least a year, says Roads and Traffic Minister Peter Bottomley.
Referring to the unsuccessful challenge by the Society for the Preservation of the Battlefield of Nazeby, he says: "Costs will increase and benefits to road users, principally journey time savings valued at about £7 million, will be lost. The delay has meant that safety benefits have been foregone of the order of three fatalities and 100 personal injury accidents, and relief from traffic for communities on nearby roads has been postponed."
