Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Association of Metropolitan Authorities' public transport committee is voting this week on a report it commissioned that attacks the Government's plan to split up Metropolitan public transport companies.

The AMA report says that this use of Section 61 of the 1985 Transport Act is unjustified, premature and could well lead to reduced service levels. It quotes Greater Manchester and West Midlands as proof that large operations have not stifled competition. It also notes the trend since deregulation of operators who are merging or holding companies with several subsidiaries as evidence that fragmentation is totally unworkable.

Lynxes in Preston

• Preston's municipal operator, Preston Bus, has bought four Leyland Lynx single-deckers to join its predominantly double-deck and minibus fleet.

Until the emergence of Zippy minibuses in 1987, the company used only double-deckers, apart from four secondhand singledeckers on contract services work.

Preston Bus has since bought over 50 minibuses to respond to the Zippy challenge in the past two years.

Al] four Lynxes have Cummins engines; two have 49 seats, the others have 47 high-backed seats for private hire.

PMT supplies RG

▪ PMT Engineering of Stoke-on-Trent has struck a deal with the giant Ryder Group to supply 32 fully fitted minibus conversions based on Mercedes-Benz 308 15-seaters.

The interior features high-back coach-type seats with underseat heating, heavy-duty Treadtnaster flooring and a roof vent.

The new vehicles are now entering service and the contract should be completed by the end of May.
