Bid for Fruehauf • Perkins Engines parent company Varity Corporation has made a bid for Fruehauf Corporation of the US, owner of the Kelsey-Hayes truck parts manufacturing group. Last week Fruehauf sold its US truck trailer division, to Terex for £139 million.

Dover's up • The number of freight lorries passing through the Port of Dover in February reached 78,128 — up 18% on 1987 (figures for 1988 were affected by the ferry strike), despite a 13% reduction in the number of ferry sailings. This was due to the introduction of two new "super-ferries".

Quick profit • Motor distributor Quicks Group has announced pretax profits up by 19.5% to £3.5 million for the year ended 31 December 1988. The 1987 figure was £2.9 million.
