Ocean down • Ocean Transport & Trading, which sold off its shipping interests last month to concentrate on transport and distribution, suffered a fall in pre-tax profits last year to 238.5 million, down from 241.2 million in 1987.
Cleaning up • An order for 34 vehicles has been won by municipal gully cleaning, water sewer and drain cleaning vehicle designer and manufacturer Reynolds Boughton (Devon). The deal, with Neolith Chemicals of Rochdale, is for 22 high-pressure waterjetting tankers and 12 gully cesspit machines mounted on Leyland Freighter tipper chassis.
TIP's Finnish • TIP Europe had paid £3.5 million for part of Nark° Leasing, the largest trailer rental business in Finland. The assets acquired include a fleet of 400 trailers. All rental and leasing contracts for the fleet have been assigned to TIP, which will gain a 10% share of the Finnish trailer market when the deal is concluded on 2 May.
On the trail • Barnsley-based Howard Whitehead (Trailer Sales) is boosting its trailer production from 300 a year to 500 units to cope with increased demand. The company, which produces all trailer types apart from tankers and tippers, also plans to increase its bodywork output and expand its trailer hire and repair services. Its hire fleet will be expanded from 20 to 50 units this year.
