• Iveco Ford has re-affirmed its commitment to the aircooled engine with the arrival of three new Deutz-powered 'Maggie' eight-leggers.

The most significant of the trio of rigid tippers are the 300.32 and 300.34 models which feature a revised version of the previous 12.8-litre Deutz BF8L 513 engine, reworked to meet forthcoming European Community legislation on reduced vehicle emissions.

While the air-cooled BF8L 513 power unit retains the twin turbocharger set-up of its predecessor, its KKK turbochargers have been revised to provide a better matching of the engine's air requirements. The camshaft profiles have also been changed, along with the inlet valves and ports, while the shape of the piston bowl and the positioning of the rings have been modified.

According to Iveco Ford, these changes result in a better mixing of the air and fuel, providing cleaner combustion.

The improved Deutz engine is rated at the latest EEC 88/ 195 standard, and in the 300.32 it produces 232kW (315hp) at 2,300rpm. In the more-powerful 300.34 there is an uprated version giving 250kW (340hp). Peak torque on the 300.32 engine is 1,132Nm (8351bft) at 1,500rpm, while the maximum torque on the 300.34's power unit is 1,182Nm (872 lbft).

Third member of the Maggie Line-up is the 300.25, powered by the naturally-aspirated 13.4litre Deutz F8L 513 vee-eight which has been re-certified to EEC 88/195. Maximum power is now quoted at 194kW (263hp) against the old 300.25's EEC 80/1269 engine rating of 188kW (252hp).

Similarly peak torque is now 900Nm (664 lbft) at 1.400rpm. Like the smaller displacement BF8L 513 engine, the F8L 513 has been engineered to meet more stringent emission levels.

All three models come with the choice of either an Eaton Fuller Roadranger nine-speed constant-mesh box or a ZF Ecosplit nine, or 16-speed synchromesh transmission. The Maggie trio is also available in two wheelbases — 5,960 and 6,460mm — each with the option of a day or sleeper cab.

Iveco Ford quotes a figure of 8,800kg for the kerbweight of a 300.32 short-wheelbase day cab chassis with 20 litres of fuel, and 8,925kg for a similar specification 300.34 chassis.

The 300.32 and 300.34 models will be sold with the option of a 3.96:1 back axle giving a geared speed of 111krn/h on standard tyres and 114Km/h on 12R22.5 tyres.

Two of the new Maggie tippers will be exhibited at the RHA's Tipcon show in Harrogate later this month.

0 Iveco Ford says the average power of eight-leggers has climbed rapidly over the past four years. In 1984, only 1% of four-axle rigids used in the construction industry were fitted with engines offering over 205kW (275hp). By last year the figure had risen to 48%.
