Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A proposal is under discussion to relocate the New Street, Canongate, Edinburgh bus station of Scottish Omnibuses Ltd on another site in the city and to use the New Street site for a £6m office block of 30,000 square metres.

This would make it the largest office block in Edinburgh in a very central position and would meet any future growth of commercial activity in the area. It would also solve the problems of Scottish Omnibuses whose operations have been hampered in recent years by the inadequacies of New Street. It had the advantage of being central but all the disadvantages of limited access, congested routes and

sheer inability to take the type of vehicles now being used. It was built in the mid-30s to take 200 buses; apart from an increase in the volume of buses in use, size of buses has increased substantially. Workshops were transferred to Seafield some 10 years ago as a partial solution, but even so the garage remains far from ideal for presentday use.

Given an alternative location — and a site at Easter Road is understood to have been regarded favourably — Scottish Omnibuses could move to a custom-built garage which would allow much easier operation than at New Street.
