Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Kent County Council is to ban lorries from a six square mile section of its country lanes.

A "before" and "after" traffic study will be undertaken in order to find out why lorries use the lanes and the extent of the problem.

Kent intends to ban vehicles over 6ft 6in. wide from an area bordered by A268. A28. B2086, and A2085. However, it has allowed lorries to use a road which runs north to south through the centre of this section.

The first traffic survey should be carried out before the end of this month. The second will be conducted soon after the ban has been introduced. All the information collected will be put before the council in September.

Mr E. R. Emery, assistant county surveyor (traffic), commented: "The council will consider the results of both studies with a view to extending the scheme. The proposed ban will operate on lanes which do not run through villages. They may want a further ban on lanes which do run through villages.

"I don't expect the increase in the volume of trunk road traffic to be dramatic. But one of our problems is that a lot of our class one roads are not fit for heavy vehicles."
