AREPORT of a Royal Commission on Transportation in Canada has been hailed as a victory for road trans

port by Mr. John Magee, executive secretary of the Canadian Automotive Transportation Association. He said that the Commission had rejected the idea that the road transport industry should be eliminated to bolster up the railways. The report mentioned the railway practice of quoting special rates to customers wile agree not to use road transport for deliveries beyond a limited radius. "This Might prevent the growth

of a forrn.of transport which may be of great value to the commerce of the country," it was stated.

• Mr. Magee, however, opposed federal control of transport. The Commission proposed that a single body should be set up to regulate the transport system throughout the country. The road transport industry. he said, would never agree to control being taken away from the provinces, to be vested in a central authority in Ottawa. , • " Ever since the railways woke up to the existence of highway transport as a competitor, the Railway Association of Canada has campaigned for central control of trucking by the Federal Government," Mr. Magee declared.

"Exhaustive study of every facet of the Railway Association's campaign con vinced us long ago that they regard central control of trucking—which means federal control—as the first step .toward strangulation of the trucking industry."

Since the previous application for higher fares had been made, costs had continued to rise, Mr. Currie submitted.

Decision was reserved by the Scottish Deputy Licensing Authority.

LEYLAND TIPPERS FOR PACIFIC PHOSPHATE FIELDS

CRELLIN BODY LICENSEE WITH regard to the announcement W on page 243 of "The Commercial Motor" dated April 6, the Lines Trailer Co., Ltd., of Scunthorpe, was appointed sole licensee of the Crellin Duplex coach body by the Falgar Motor Co.. Ltd., by a deed dated May 1, 1950, and the question of any difference between the Faigar Motor Co., Ltd., and Mr. C. G. Crellin and Mr. G. B. Winsor in no way affects the appointment of the Lines Trailer Co., Ltd., as sole licensee. This announcement was made last Saturday by Messrs. R. A. C. Symes and Co., solicitors, Scunthorpe.

CONCESSION FOR TIPPERS

ACTION by the tipping vehicles group of the Road Haulage Association has caused the Ministry of Labour to rescind that part of the Building (Safety, Health and Welfare) Regulations which required vehicles engaged on building sites to hold certificates of fitness. The original regulation was intended primarily to cover vehicles used only on sites, but was, in fact, applied to lorries operating under licence on the road. Draft regulations which obviate the need for the certificate have recently been published.

"ANGLO-AMERICAN CHANGES NAME THE name of the Anglo-American 1 Oil Co., Ltd., has been changed to the Esso Petroleum Co., Ltd. This alteration brings the company into line with affiliates throughout the world. The Anglo-American Oil Co. was the first overseas subsidiary of the American Standard Oil Co., having been established in 1888.
