Hollings and Guest Bundling Presses.

,One of the problems with which any large engineering concern has to engage at the present time is that of manipulation and disposal of the great amount of scrap metal which must necessarily accumulate from time to time. Of course, now that quantity production is the rule rather than the exception, this question has to be looked at. from an efficiency as well as from an economical standpoint.

The old-fashioned method of bundling by hand is most inadequate to deal with the situation, and then, again, the shortage of labour will not permit of skilled men's being utilized for such work. There is little doubt that the use Of hydraulic power has been found to be the most satisfactory and economical way of bundling scrap metal preparatory to its being remelted or handed over to the'dealers. One . of the largest makers of this class of plant is Hollings and Guest, Ltd., Thimble Mill Lane, Birminghani, which concern is perhaps better known to certain branches of the commercial-vehicle industry by the fact that it makes several types of substantial tire presses. Three designs in these presses are made, one is intended for use in bundling brass, copper or aluminium; another for dealing with wrought iron scrap and clippings, and the third for briquetting swarf and borings.

They can be worked by hand, or, if necessary, by power pumps. Since the outbreak of war, we understand from the company, these presses have been installed . by many large munition works, metal rollers, and scrap merchants, and, in several instances, repeat orders have been received. Amongst the concerns which have found it expedient to instal this class of press we may mention the

King's Norton. Metal lliott's Metal Co., the Birmingham Metal and Co.,thunition Co., the General Electric Co., Kynoch, Ltd., etc., etc. A number is also in use at Woolwich Arsenal and the Mint, Birmingham, whilst there has been a large demand for them from French munition and ordnance works.

Portable Electric Drills and Lathe Grinders.

The illustration which we reproduce herewith shows several types of portable electric drills and lathe grinders which are being marketed in this country by that well-known accessory house of Brown Bros., Ltd., S2-34, Great Eastezn Street, London, E.C. As will be seen, these drills and grinders are compact in design, and, it is stated, they represent the latest and most improved types of this class of accessory. They cer

thinly possess the necessary features to make them useful as time and labour-saving devices, for which purpose they have been primarily designed.. The accessories are stated to be rapid in production, whilst they are light and easy to handle, which enables them to be conveniently carried from place to place. The economy, in regard to current consumption and upkeep, with which these devices can be operated is certainly a feature which should recommend their use. The gears, spindles and other parts of the drills and grinders are manufactured oi good-quality material. The use of aluminium frames enables the weight to be. kept at a minimum without in any way sacrificing strength and durability. The weight is carefully distributed throughout the designs.

The range offered is a very complete one, IRA the most useful tool would appear to be that described as model B drill. Two pictures of this are included in our illustration. It is provided with an alternative attachment for emery wheels, and one of these may be carried on a dummy spindle as shown in our photographs. The automatic chuck spanner, which is broughtiinto effect by swinging the drill spindle from the operating position to one at right angles is very handy.
