Combines Goods Delivery and Moving Advertisements.

In a preceding-issue we had an article impressing the usefulness, of a well-displayed advertisement upon the panels of delivery vans, and this week we give particulars of a very novel arrangement which goes somewhat farther than the ideas expressed in our article. This vehicle has just been introduced by the Motor Car Emporium, Ltd., 1, Addison Road North, for delivery and advertising purposes. The engine and other technical details are an entirely new line with-this company, and will be known in the future as their " A " type. The engine is a two-cylinder giving nominally 12h.p., and developing lith.p. when accelerated. It is fired with electric ignition worked from accumulators and an induction coil. The contact breaker is carried up above the engine in a vertical position, so as to be easily accessible; the inlet valves are mechanically-operated, and are interchangeable with the exhaust valves. The engine is situated immediately beneath the driver's seat, so as to give the greatest possible platform space from the dashboard -to the rear. Two side doors give access to the engine, and by the removal of four bolts the whole framework supporting the driver's seat can be quickly removed. From the engine the drive is taken through a large diameter (15in.) leather-lined clutch o the gear box. The shaft front clutch to gear, which can be quickly taken down in case of need for removal of clutch or gear box, has a universal joint of a new pattern at each end. The gear box gives four forward speeds and a reverse, actuated by the usual side lever, and the final drive to the road wheels is secured by two side roller chains. The petrol tank is carried at the rear of the van, and has connected to it a pressure feed pipe by means of a bypass from the exhaust. The petrol, however, does not feed direct, bti, into a small subsidiary tank on the dashboard, whence it reaches the carburetter by gravity only. This subsidiary tank has a sighting gauge inserted in its face, and has also a separate filler at the top. This supplementary tank obviates the use of a hand pump for obtaining pressure to the fuel tank when starting up from the cold, as petrol can be poured into it of sufficient quantity to feed the carburetter until the engine automatically supplies the pressure to the main fuel tank. The lubrication of the engine is maintained by gravity sight feeds from the oil tank on the dashboard. The lubrication of the vehicle throughout has received very careful attention, and we might instance the oil box on the ends of the countershaft which deem': from the too usual method of a tawdry screw down greaser, and are really what their name implies. The brakes are of a substantial nature, the pedal operating a leatherlined brake on the countershaft. and a

side lever controlling the two internal expansion brakes within the drums of the driving sprockets attached to the driving wheels.

Coining to the special advertising feature, inspection, of the illustration below will show thaz on the shaft from engine to gear [lox is fitted a spur wheel. Inside the wagon bony is a shaft running parallel with the propeller shaft, and having attached to it a spur wheel which meshes with that on the propeller shaft. The shaft just mentioned is carried along the side of the body as far as the cen.re line of the wagon, where another spur wheel is attached, which, in its turn, drives wheels attached to rollers at the top of the wagon. At the top and lxititan of the wagon on each side are two pairs of rollers—four m all. Over these rollers can be run any desired advertisement, either opaque or transparent. Wien the engine is started up a lever can be manipulated so as to cause the rollers to revolve at a predetermined. speed. The rollers carry with them the advertisements, which are thus continually revolving from top to boi:tom of the wagon sides. At night time the revolving advertisements could be illuminated from the interior of the wagon, either by electric or acetylene light, thus securing not alone an illuminated advertisement, but giving the advertisers a choice of a large number of combinations. It will be appreciated that the advertisements could be changed from day to day, or even from hour to hour. The space given to the advertisement rollers is only a small proportion of the interior of the wagon, which could otherwise be devoted to the usual purposes of delivery or goods carrying.

In considering the prime cost of such a van as is here described the earning capacity has not alone to be considered, but also the immense advertising scope. A smart and clever advertisement attracts the notice of zhousands of passers-hv. and with the means provided of securing an ever-changing medium the effect is far reaching. Although tangible results in pounds, shillings, and pence may not always be immediately realised, money spent in sound advertising is bound to have the effect desired—always providing that the right method is selected. Those on the lookout for something really novel that will at once arrest attention might do worse than get into touch with the Motor Car Emporium, Ltd.
