Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Irte, Trailer, Dereham, Axle

I notice your magazine has been devoting attention recently to tipper stability, with coverage of the United tests at Cobham.

At Fruehauf we say "well done" to the likes of United, Wilcox and SIAS for designing trailers that meet the IATE Class-A side slope of 70 fully loaded and fully tipped.

Here at Fruehauf we have been pursuing the practicalities of improving stability and safety within the bounds of cost and high payloads since the late 1970s, and we are very please' that others are taking the IRTE standard seriously.

The recent ad that STAS placed in CM makes very interesting reading when it refers to -full air dumped as recommended by SAF suspension". Your readers will know that dumping air in this instance would result in a load on the single rearmost axle of i figure in excess of 28,000kg. The load on the bogie of our trailer was more than 32,000ki spread evenly over each axle.

While we fully accept that ni one in their right mind would attempt to replicate the conditions of this test in a normal working environment, r provides an empirical comparison. Having said that, i would seem to be a more valuable test if as many of the normal working practices as possible could be included.

it seems unlikely that a safe situation would prevail if a paving machine were propellin; a tipper with anything like 28 tonnes on one axle. We have always taken the view that it is safer to spread the load over all available axles.

For the record, perhaps we could remind your readers tha Fruehauf s claim that all the models in their standard meet the Class-ACT") standard is as true today as it was in 1984. Also for the record, on the model tested we had a 'modest" payload of 30,000kg and "only" reached 8° before backing off and going on to test a longer, higher trailer which went to 7.50.

So as the advert goes, "Fruehauf are happy to inform their customers that all the tippers in their standard range meet the IRTE Class-A standar( with 'all their feet on the ground': Angus Spooner, General Trailers Fruehauf, Dereham, Norfolk.
