has published a 70-page illustrated IN AN ATTEMPT to make planners more aware of the needs of 14 operators, the Confederation of British Road Passenger Transpt manual. has published a 70-page illustrated The book, Urban Planning and Design for Road Public Trans port, has been prepared by CPT's traffic committee, with input mainly from Scott Hellewell of South Yorkshire PTE and Tony Young of Greater Manchester Transport. Other PTE and National Bus officers also were involved with its preparation.

CPT president Ron Whittle explained that the industry has to get the message across to politi cians and council officers that towns and cities would grind to a standstill without buses, and said he hoped that the book would help planners take account of the industry's longand short-term needs.

It details the role and objectives of public transport, and ex plains the organisational structure of the industry, dividing operators into headings of PTEs, nationalised groups, municipalities, and independents.

The inter-linked effects of cost, revenue, and service levels are broken down, and readers are taken through every process by which a passenger makes a journey.

A particularly useful section details the different sizes and types of bus available on the market, and, in an effort to stop planners from designing roads which cannot accept buses, lists the turning circles, length, height, and widths. The relative advantages of dif

ferent types of bus turn', points and bus shelters are 0 plained, as is the relationship b tween bus routes and housin industry, and medical ail schools facilities.

There is similar treatment F bus stations, including a loolm whether bus stations really a the best solution in every cap and planners are urged to 01 buses access to town centrv even where parts are pede trianised.

The book has been endors4 by Transport Secretary Norriu Fowler, whose foreword drab attention to the need f4 operators and planners to mai tam n close links from the earlio stage of a development.

While some may queetk whether Mr Fowler's introd0 tion of a more competitive erh ronment into the bus Indust might make such forrrt. planning of services unnece sary. CPT is convinced that ti book will be of equal use , small operator and large.

The book is available fro CPT at Sardinia House, 52 Li coin's Inn Fields, London Wa 3LZ for £4.50, including postal
