An All-purpose 4 x 4, a 30-cwt. Van and a 5-tonner Added to Range of Vehicles for Export .

AMONG the new vehicles to be shown at, the Commercial Motor Show at Earls Court by Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., Adderley Park, Birmingham, will be a 30-cwt. four-wheel-drive lorry, a 30-cwt. van and a 5-ton lorry. The four-wheel-drive model is an all-purpose vehicle powered by a six-cylindered overheadvalve petrol engine of 4,196 c.c., developing 72 b.b.p. at 2,750 r.p.m.

It has a four-bearing crankshaft with white-metal-lined detachable-shell bearings. Other engine details include a duplex roller-chain drive to the camshaft, gear-pump pressure lubrication system with a floating filter pick-up and external full-flow filter, downdraught carburetter, wet-type air cleaner and centrifugal water pump.

The flexibly mounted radiator is pressurized and water circulation is thermostatically controlled. .

The main gearbox provides four forward speeds and a reverse. Coupled with it is an auxiliary transfer box providing a " high " drive of 1 to 1 for either two-wheel or four-wheel drive, or a low, automatically engaged fourwheel-drive ratio of 2 to 1. The axles have a ratio of 5,714 to 1, and the wheels are equipped with 9.00 by 20 tyres with cross-country treads.

The chassis specification includes a hydraulic braking system in which the hand brake operates on all four wheels. The semi-elliptic suspension system incorporates auxiliary leaves in the rear springs. There are two petrol tanks, each of 10-gallon capacity. Lighting and starting are by 12-volt equipment. The overall length of the chassis is 17 ft. 6 ins. It has a ground clearance of 12i ins., and weighs, with all-steel cab, 2 tons 8 cwt.

The cab has a double-skin roof to form protection against extremes of heat and cold. Further to this end, a controlled system of ventilation is -provided. The body, which is mainly of steel construction, measures 7 ft. 11 ins. long, 6 ft. wide and has sides 2 ft. l ins. deep. Tubular steel hoopsticks support a canvas cover, the whole being quickly detachable.

Various types of body can be accommodated on the chassis, which incorporates a towing attachment. Provision is also made for a winch drive. It is understood that, for the time being; this chassis is available only to the export market.

The 30-cwt. van is of the forwardcontrol type, and has a four-cylindered overhead-valve engine and four-speed gearbox with provision for a power take-off, The drive is taken from the gearbox to a spiral-bevel rear axle by an open propeller shaft.

Hydraulic braking, semi-elliptic springs, direct-acting shock absorbers back and front, 12-volt electrical equipment and 7.50 by 16-in. 8-ply tyres form other items in the specification.

The van body, which has a capacity of 235 cubic ft., has flush-fitting sliding doors on each side of the driving compartment. The doors at the rear are hung on outrigger hinges and can be folded back against the sides of the body.

The wheelbase is 8 ft. 4ins. and the overall length ,of the chassis is 14 ft. 31 ins. Ground clearance is 9 ins., and the track 4 ft. 101 ins at the front and 4 ft. 10 ins at the rear. The overall length of the complete vehicle is 14 ft. 71 ins., width 6 ft. 7 ins., and height 7 ft. 81 ins.

This new model will be available with either right-hand or left-hand steering, and whilst the present output will be devoted to the export market, home deliveries will be made as soon as production speeds up.

Another model also available only to overseas buyers is the MorrisCommercial FVS 12/5 5-tonner. This is a forward-control version of the NVS1 13/5 5-tonner and is powered by a 100 b.h.p. six-cylindered overheadvalve petrol engine.

The cab is secured to a sub-frame, which in turn is flexibly mounted on the chassis. ln addition, there is a special front stabilizing support. This consists of a separate cross-member carrying at its extremities flexible rubber mountings to which the front of the cab is bolted. This form of mounting controls cab movement relative to the chassis under extreme conditions of operation. The chassis specification includes a four-speed gearbox with provision for a power take-off, open propeller shaft, spiral-bevel rear axle, servo hydraulic braking system, ' progressive semi-elliptic springs with helper leaves at the rear, and 7.50 by 20-in. 10-ply tyres.

Chassis weight is 1 ton 19 cwt. The overall length is 20 ft. 71 ins., ground clearance 101 ins, and the wheelbase 12 ft. 6 ins. The lorry body has an interior length of 16 ft. 6 ins, and a width of 6 ft. 71 ins. This model can be supplied with an oil engine.
