THE patronage of li.M. The Queen has been granted to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The council of the Institution haa granted a petition calling for a new branch to cover the following counties:—Beds, Berks, Bucks, Cambs, Essex, Herts, Hunts, Norfolk, Northants (except the Solos of Peterborough), Oxon, Suffolk, Surrey and Middlesex. The exact area of the branch has not yet been defined, but will be soon. An inaugural meeting for the election of a chairman, honorary secretary and committee will be held next month.

Future arrangements of the automobile division of the Institution include the following:— October 7, annual general meeting.

November 4, lecture on automatic transmissions by C. A. Chayne.

November 9. lecture on research by H. E. Merritt.

January 13. lecture on assessing the life of commercial vehicles by J. H. Alden.

All meetings take place at 5.30 p.m. at Storey's Gate, St. James's Park, London, S.W.I. The annual dinner of the Institution will be held on October 16 at the Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane, London, W.I.

JOINT OPERATION TO NEW ESTATE

Two out of every 10 buses running

to Sunderland Corporation's new housing estate at Farringdon will be operated by the Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., and the Sunderland and District Omnibus Co., Ltd., whilst the remainder will be worked by Sunderland Transport Department.

The Northern Licensing Authority announced this decision last week, having heard applications by the three undertakings to serve the estate. Northern General and the municipal department already share services to two other corporation estates at Pennywell and Hylton Red House.

BRUSH TRUCKS FOR HOSPITAL

AN order for two battery-electric elevating-platform trucks and a Cob tractor has been placed with Brush Coachwork, Ltd., Loughborough, by the Bridge of Earn Hospital Board through the Brush Scottish distributor, Industrial Motor Services, Ltd., Bellevue Motor Works, East London Street, Edinburgh.

As reported in "The Commercial Motor" on August 15, the hospital expects to recoup the outlay within 18 months by replacing internalcombustion-engined types by the electrics.

STRIKE COST £6,000

A3i-DAY strike by drivers and conductors of Birkenhead Transport Department last year, concerning the engagement of female conductors. cost -0.000 in loss of receipts, states the general manager, Mr. G. A. Cherry, in his annual report. It was the first stoppage of work in the town since the General Strike of 1926 and was quite unnecessary, he says, for 160 women are now working amicably with the rest of the staff.
