The Use of Mobile Welding Plants for the Repair of Damaged Vessels.

Tilling-Stevens, Ltd., of Maidstone, have specialized to a great extent in the production of mobile electric welding plants. The company have turned oat from their works a number of vehicles of this class which are performing invalnable national duties in many of the large shipyards throughout the country. Wei reproduce. herewith an illustration of another vebicle of this type which has recently been delivered to an Irish shipbuilding concern, the Larne Sliiphuilcl• Mg Co., Ltd., of Lame.

The chassis is of the Tilling-Stevens standard arc-welding type, capable of supplying current for one electric arc, and the body has been specially designed

wart 41. view to producing a serviceable body as cheaply as possible, consistent with good workmanship and materials. Immediately behind the cab is a switchboard with the necessary regulating resistances for electric welding. The terminals to which the cables are connected for welding are situated on the front two bearers under the fore part of the body immediately behind the Gab. The positive and negative signs are on the two front cross bearers.

In the centre of the body is mounted a pneumatic compressor plant capable of supplying air for operating a No. 1 Boyer pneumatic hammer. The air receiver is placed tteder the rear of the vehicle, and

the plant is provided with 500 ft. of armoured hose. In the fare part of the body on the near side a bench is provided with a small parallel vice, and cupboards and lockers are provided to contain the spares, cables, electrode holders, head and hand screens, pneumatic hose, chipping hammers, and other tools which are required by the welder. The vehicle is completely equipped with electric lighting, headlamps, side lamps, tail lamp, to, gether with internal light and inspection lamp. This plant is ready for immediate nse, and has recently been handed over to the Larne Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., to deal with urgent Admiea,Ity electric welding repairs.
