Dashboard Edging.

[2018] " WILLow " writes :—" Where can I purchase half-round brass strip for use on the edges of dashboards ? "

ANSWER.—You ought to be able to obtain the kind of edging you require from: Denton and Stone, Ltd., of Branbridge Street, Birmingham ; Albany Engineering Co., Ltd., of Ossory Road, Old Kent Road, S'.E. ; Coventry Motor Fittings Co., of Coventry ; Doherty Motor Fittings Co., of Coventry.

Wants To buy F,rrules.

[2019] "HAULAGE " writes :—" Could you inform us where we can get sleeves or long ferrules for fitting to ends of hood hoops ? The hoops split at the ends, and by fitting a Moss sleeve over them about 10 in. long it would strengthen and prevent the slipping."

ANSWER.—We think you can obtain the fittings you require from : Birmingham Battery Co. Ltd., Selly Oak, Birmingham ; Elliott Metal Co. Ltd., Selly Oak, Birmingham Everitt, Allan and Co., Smethwick, Birmingham; Mint, Ltd., Ickneild Street, Birmingham ; C. W. Powll and Bros., Aston Road, Birmingham.

Wants Tax Rebate.

[2020] " LAUNDRYMAN " writes :—" Can you inform us the best way to buy petrol for a small van? What should be the price? Can a rebate of the tax be obtained for commercial work ? "

ANSWER.—If you are likely only to use, say, four-six gallons of petrol a day, it will be best for you to store sufficient petrol in two-gallon cans. You may store up to 60 gallons for your own use, but this must be kept in a suitable place at a distance of not less than 20 yards from any dwelling place. You can secure a rebate of 50 per cent. of the 3d. petrol tax if the petrol be only used for a commercial vehicle. For any petrol you use during such time as this vehicle be not employed solely for commercial purposes you will have to bear the full tax.

An American Inquiry.

[2021] " OVERLAND " writes :—" We are desirous of obtaining information as to the progress that has been made in England with pressed-steel wheels for commercial vehicles, and should deem it a favour if you would acquaint us with the steps that have been made along this line, recommending to us the companies manufacturing the most satisfactory ones."

ANSWER.—Very little has been done with regard to the employment of pressed-steel wheels in this country, although individual makers have, in certain cases, fitted welded steel pressed plate wheels ; or, in other cases, steel disc wheels. As a matter of fact, however, the solid cast-steel road wheel is undoubtedly becoming more popular every day. The wood wheel is in considerable disfavour, owing to the difficulty of keeping it tight under all conditions of weather and road, whilst the welded-steel wheel has the disadv,:-tage of not providing suitable distribution of metal. We should recommend to you in this respect : John Sankey and Sons, Ltd., Bilston.

With regard to the east-steel wheel, the Atlas Resilient Road Wheels, Ltd., 37, Cross Street, Manchester. are the largest suppliers in England. Many users of commercial vehicles are obtaining such wheels direct from foundries in Charleroi, Belgium.

Wants To Know Makers.

[2022] " PROGRESSIVE " writes :—" Would you kindly put me in touch with a really good firm manufacturing commercial vehicles suitable for the North of England and Scotland.

"1 can shortly place a fair number of orders for commercial cars, and, as I have not had anything to do with them before, I should be very much obliged if you would advise me in the matter."

ANSWER.—The manufacturers in the North of England and in Scotland to whom you might care to address yourself are: Albion Motor Car Co., Ltd., Seotstoun, Glasgow ; Argylls, Ltd., Alexandria, N.B. ; Arrol-Johnston, Ltd, Paisley, N.B. ; Belsize Motors, Ltd., Clayton, Manchester ; Clayton and Co. (Huddersfield), Ltd., Union Works, Huddersfield; Halley's Industrial Motors, Ltd., Yoker, Glasgow ; and Leyland Motors, Ltd., Leyland, Lancs.

Business That We Do Not Do.

[2023] " MISTAKRN " writes : —" We have an inquiry for a tractor motor for a lawn mower. Do you supply, and if so what price and trade discount ?"

ANSWER.—In reply to the letter which you addressed to the Commercial Motor Co.„ we have to inform you that this is the office Of THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR, the journal which deals with the industrial-vehicle industry and its offshoots. We are not in a position, therefore, to quote you as you suggest.

In default of closer particulars as to sizes, etc., we should not recommend you to use a tractor for a lawn mower. As a matter of fact, it is difficult to suggest a machine of suitable size for this purpose. Thos. Green and Son, Ltd., Smithfield Ironworks, Leeds, makes a first-class motor-driven mower.

Running a Passenger Service.

[2024] " DRIVER " writes :—" I am thinking of starting a, service by motor chars-à-bancs from London to Clacton-on-Sea, next summer. Can you inform me if T should have to get permission frOrn Scotland Yard, or any other authority ? Also, should I have to be medically examined or have to pass an examination for driving Should be pleased to know if there are any other preliminaries to be gone through, that I have no knowledge of."

ANSWER.—If you intend to pick up passengers in the streets, you must get a licence from Scotland Yard, and from the licensing committee of any other borough or Urban Council through which you run with that intention. If you merely intend to ply for private hire, booking your passengers at offices, there is no need to get these public-service licences. We do not think you would require to be medically examined if you are ordinarily fit. You would require to get a driver's licence, which involves no examination, and costs you 5s. a year, from the _London County Council, or from any other registering authority. Only one such licence is required annually.

You will have to pay Li down for the registration of the vehicle, to any registering authority, or the maker of the machine would probably see to that for you. Additionally, you will have to pay three guineas carriage tax, and you may have to pay something for a police plate—that is, if you intend to,ply for hire as pointed out, above.
