The growth in imports is bad news for some sectors, but for container

hauliers the cloud has a sterling silver lining. Bridget Carter reports.

FELIXSTOWE CONTAINER haulier Maritime Transport has boosted its pre-tax profits by £700,000 in a year to £2.7m thanks to soaring levels of container traffic coming into the UK.

Turnover has also rocketed; its accounts for the year ending 31 December 2005 show turnover grew from £44.6m to £56.6m. The company has more than doubled in size since a management buy-out in 2(X)1.

This success has been helped by the growth in imports from the Far East and China: business development director Andrew McNab says: "It is the product of hard work and the existing customer growth. We work for the major container shipping lines and they are over 70% of the business.

"We're very pleased with the result. It is building on the performances we have demonstrated over the past five years as an independent company."

In the financial report, directors say they are "very confident" that the business will continue to perform well in 2006 following the acquisition of two major clients one of which was Hyundai Merchant Marine and the renewal of contracts with all its existing clients.
