Refurbished ships and new routes

• Following DFDS Seaway's acquisition of Fjord Line's Fjord Norway, the company plans to continue the current service between Newcastle and Western Norway. The ship will be refurbished and renamed after which it is due to go into service on 9 November, making two sailings a week from Newcastle until May 2007 when it will increase to three.

• There have been several changes at Stena Line in the past year. August brought the introduction of the Stena Seatraderon the Holyhead-Dublin route as well as a new freight ship on the Holland-Killinghome route, with another one due to be added in Spring 2007. Also to come in 2007 will be the enlargement of Stena Britanica and Holland/ca running between the Hook of Holland and Harwich route. However, the Stena Discoverywill be removed from this route.

• AT Ferries has expanded its operations within the past year with the inclusion of the Portsmouth-Bilbao route. Since May it has offered two departures a week from both ports, and the company says its best ferries have been allocated to the route, with the Fortunyfeaturing a cinema, outside swimming pool and disco.

*There have been a couple of new additions to Norfoildine's fleet in the past year. Operating between Dover and Dunkerque the company claims its multi-million-pound investment represents the largest single spend on the short sea routes from Dover by any ferry company over the past decade. The most recent vessel to join the fleet was the Maersk Dover, which was launched last July; the Maersk Defftwent to work in February. Features include dedicated vehicle and accommodation decks for freight drivers, with a restaurant and lounge. Each ferry can take 120 LGVs. The crossing time has been cut from two hours to lhr 45min and there are 24 sailings a day.

• Sea France has introduced a £3.50 fuel surcharge on all artics.

• A vessel has been added to Transmanche Ferries' Newhaven-Dieppe route. The Cote dAbatre offers 62 freight spaces and a subsidised drivers' cafeteria; it will soon be joined by a sister ship, the Seven Sisters.
