AN OPERATOR HAS had its four-vehicle licence suspended until it attends an inquiry to explain how its vehicles are maintained, how its drivers are controlled and how the interests of road safety are being met.

North-Western Traffic Commissioner Beverley Bell said solicitors for Buxton-based Corbuild had sought an adjournment of the public illy uiry, claiming director Stephen Goodwin was off work with stress and co-director Brian Hadfield had left the company.

Transport manager Leon Merrick had written saying that he resigned from the company in 1998.

Traffic examiner Keith Henry said Goodwin was the driving force behind the company. He had interviewed him on site on 25 August and spoken to him by phone at the company's premises only last week. He believed the company was still operating under Goodwin's control.

He had been told by Goodwin that Merrick was still handling some of the transport manager's role.

Vehicle examiner Martin Garlick said he had been told Hadfield was acting as transport manager on a part-time basis.

The TC said she was unable to ascertain if anyone was in control of the company; a company search still showed Hadfield as a director.

She was concerned about the whole operation of the fleet — the vehicles were engaged in arduous work. There were a number of serious convictions affecting road safety and fair competition.

There were also problems with maintenance. One vehicle had been given two prohibitions for loose wheelnuts within a short period of time: there was no driver defect-reporting system: and the maintenance records were unsatisfactory.

She was also concerned that one driver was not using the authorised operating centre.
