Only by improving the situation will "the poor practices of a small minority of EU hauliers...be penalised in a way that ultimately benefits the whole industry", says Transport Trends in Europe, Comparisons arid Contrasts.

The report, which was compiled by the University of Westminster for RHA Financial Services, concludes that it is "essential that the approaches to enforcement, and the extent of enforcement, become more even throughout the Union".

European Freight traffic is expected to increase by around 60% between 1990 and 2010, with most of the growth taken up by road transport. Trade with central and eastern European countries also looks set to rise, says the report.
