Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A Labour government would introduce tougher enforcement of drivers' hours regulations, says shadow Transport Minister Michael Meacher.

The party conference in Brighton supported a Transport and General Workers Union resolution that: "Labour recognises the consequences of driver fatigue to the health and wellbeing of drivers as well as to public safety, and therefore calls for a working day with adequate rest periods, strict regulations and proper enforcement."

TGWU union leader Bill Morris reiterated the call for an eight-hour working day, saying: ''There is one rule for the private motorist and another for the lorry driver. The Government cares little and does nothing about lorry drivers."

Labour confirms that the party is ready to give Traffic Area Offices extra powers to boost enforcement of the driving hours law: "Labour is already looking at introducing corporate manslaughter charges where it can be proven an employer forced a driver to work illegal hours and a person is killed as a result"

C The Labour conference also approved a motion calling for a ban on the export of calves to be raised in veal crates.
