Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

to stop backsliders • Starting on hills is set to become a lot easier with Hillholder—a device being developed by Wabco.

Pressing the Hillholder button (instead of using the park brake) holds the air pressure in the brake chambers electronically. As the clutch is released to pull away, a micro switch on the pedal releases the pressure in the brakes and the vehicle can move off smoothly without rolling backwards.

If the vehicle does start to roll back when the brake is released, pressing the pedal harder will raise the pressure in the brake chamber. This higher pressure will then be held electronically until released.

E CM has tried Hillholder on an uncoupled Freightliner tractive unit, using the test hills at Wabco's new test track near Hannover. Having stopped on the hill and pressed the Hillholder button, it was with a little trepidation that the pedal was released. But the vehicle held its ground, the test dials showing the pressure held in the chambers.

As the clutch was released the vehicle rolled back momentarily—a few centimetres at most—before pulling away.

Better results came with a less tentative approach as the pedal moved from releasing the brakes to taking up the drive more quickly.

When this happened there was no roll back.

Wabco is looking at different ways of signalling that the clutch is at take-up point: it says the micro switch arrangement is too variable as clutch wear can alter the take-up point.
