• European legislation governing hazardous waste could land hauliers who service their own vehicles with large bills for disposing of waste oil.

The EU's Hazardous Waste Directive 91/689 is expected to be included in the British Special Waste Regulations 1995, imposing tighter controls on waste lubricant collection. Hauliers would be required to give three days' notice to local waste collection authorities before moving contaminated oil. A fee has been proposed of £22 per movement. The UK regulations were due last Summer: no new date has been fixed and the Department of the Environment admits the timescale For introducing them is "slipping".
