Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Code

11 In his paper on load security Mr W. fills, assistant national secretary of the reight Transport Association, explained te background and purpose of the Idustry's Code of Practice on Safety of oads on Vehicles.

The ultimate responsibility for the safety r loads rests with vehicle operators, said ItMills, but he suggested that this should 3t be to the exclusion of the chassis and 3dy manufacturers. The Code contained any references to vehicle equipment, eadboards and other load-restraining luipment although it was not primarily rected at manufacturers.

Earlier this year the FTA had written to 55 companies known, or thought to be volved in vehicle bodybuilding. The ziect of the letter was to draw attention to .e Code and to seek assurance that the -inciples embodied in the Code had been 'opted. Only 27 replies had been received, ne of these not involved in vehicle )dybuilding. Of the remaining 18, four had ;ver heard of the Code and another simply nt their advertising literature • without )mment. Only 10 companies declared

knowledge of the Code and confirmed that they worked to it.

This sort of response, argued Mr Mills, scarcely served to assure the industry that the Code had been taken seriously by the bodybuilding industry.
