• An owner-driver had his licence suspended for one month and his margin of one removed when he had to appear under Section 69 before the deputy LA, Mr Hugh James, at Cardiff.

Mr William G. Hughes, The Avenue, Merthyr Tydfil, had been convicted on two occasions for overloading.

The first time was in July 1971 when he was hauling coal to a power station. Mr Hughes said there was no public weigh-bridge available and he did not pass one en route. "I had the normal number of buckets put on which were within the weight when dry but on this occasion the coal was wet," he said.

The second occasion, in April, 1973, Mr Hughes was carrying steel. "I agree it was overweight. I got mixed up with the conversion from tons to kilograms to tons and hundredweights. I have been very careful since," said Mr Hughes.

Taking a very serious view, Mr James said he could not overlook the matter much as he would like to. "I propose to take away your margin of one vehicle and suspend your licence for one month. I hope you won't come before this court again."

Mr Hughes was told he had the right to appeal.
