Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A major investment programme in Europe — preferably in the UK — is being planned by the American Greyhound Corporation. This was revealed by Mr Jim Kerrigan. president of the Corporation's mammoth Bus Lines, when I spoke to him last week, writes Martin Haves.

Mr Kerrigan admitted that he was visiting Europe with the express intention of looking for suitable outlets for Greyhound investment. He was considering the potential for joint ventures in both the operation and manufacture of vehicles. Annual turnover of Greyhound is currently about three billion dollars so any investment programme is likely to be on a large scale.

Mr Kerrigan was in England last week for the Yeates coach show at Loughborough where a Greyhound coach is on display until October 16 (CM, last week). During

his visit he talked to Mr Freddy Wood, chairman of the National Bus Company, and Lord Stokes of British Leyland, Mr Kerrigan said that he would much prefer to invest in Britain rather than Continental Europe because Greyhound already had interests here.

While in Europe, Mr Kerrigan was also expecting to visit various manufacturers, including Saviem in France and Bus and Car in Belgium. He told me he appreciated that the basic Greyhound vehicle did not fit into the European concept but felt that there was an opportunity to sell some of its technology on a reciprocating basis. He was, for instance, impressed by some British bodies on show at Loughborough which, he thought, had some potential as touring coaches in the USA.
