• An inspection of the two bridges carrying M5 over A456 trunk road at the Quinton Interchange revealed cracks larger than those normally expected in reinforced concrete structures.
An investigation has shown that at four locations in each bridge some remedial measures are necessary, says the DoE. The best means of undertaking them is being studied. In the meantime, to prevent the bridges receiving their full design-load and possibly aggravating the situation, the hard shoulders have been closed and heavy vehicles will be restricted to the nearside lanes when the necessary traffic orders have been made.
